Durban City Tour Durban Tapestry – Setting the scene
City Tour:  Beachfront, Botanic Gardens, City Centre, Indian Market.

The City of Durban is unlike any other city in South Africa.  The warm Indian Ocean creates a sub-tropical climate that nurtures the vast sugar cane plantations which brought the people from Madras and Calcutta to cut it when the Zulus refused as they didn't need money.

The Colonial British power established the first streets and government whilst the Indian traders grew businesses in the Casbah.  Pass along the Victoria Embankment, into the City past the Edwardian City Hall of 1910 and on to the Botanical Gardens which was an experimental farm to see what would grow that could make money! Here we visit the Orchid House and collection of rare Cycads behind a natural lake with many species of birds.  Then we shall experience a view of the beaches, and a chance to find unusual items at the Indian Market along with the spices.

Wander through the interesting colonial architecture of Durban, the magic of the craft markets, the Indian market - where a bargain is only a negotiation away and of course the hard to resist flea markets.

We explore the temples, churches and architecture Durban is blessed with. Drive past the beautiful City Hall and Playhouse theatre complex before reaching the Indian market where you'll have time to explore. Take a peek inside the Emanuel Cathedral before we head off to the informal settlement of Cato Manor. End the morning with tea at the beautiful Botanic Gardens (own account).
A day tour of the city of Durban, with the morning dedicated to showing you the cultural and historical contrasts of this city. Discover the highlights of the city of Durban, with the morning dedicated to showing you the cultural and historical contrasts of this city.
Indian Markets, where you can get a taste of Indian culture. Enjoy the scents of spices and see the hawkers and herbalists ply their trades.
Kwazulu-Natal is one of the largest provinces, with some of the most breathtaking scenery, vibrant cultural mixes, and some of the most fascinating history. We offer tours that cover it all.

The City you are visiting has an unusual mix of people from the East, the West, and the Zulus, reflects its intricate and interesting history.

Traditional and modern Zulus, whose ancestors came down the East coast of Africa over 2,000 years ago, are now found in all tiers of society.  Most of the Whites originated from the British Isles but interesting additions came from European countries and some, even, via Australia and America.

From 1860 onwards, from India, came the Hindus, Tamils, Gujaratis, Telugu and Muslims. The former as indentured laborers and the latter as traders, forming the largest Indian settlement in the world outside of India.  With them came an Eastern cuisine, simple and sophisticated forms of architecture and a wealth of traditions and knowledge.

The Durban Tapestry tour is one of discovery and of “setting the scene” by visiting places that reflect the varied contributions and life-styles of Durban people.  From the beautiful colonial buildings, modern office blocks, churches, temples, bazaars, the busy port operating in a large bay, old established suburbs and recently arrived people settled in cardboard, wood and plastic homes.

You will leave this tour with a feeling of “belonging” to Durban.  Welcome.
